Writer

A person who writes books or articles to be published.

What do they do?

  • An author is someone who writes long stories. A fiction book can have between 80,000 to 200,000 words, so they need to be able to plan and execute his work. This requires dedication and patience.
  • Non-Fiction Writer is someone who writes in a specialized field. This may include technical writers and academic writers. They are able to take a large amount of information and break it down so it is readable text. This type of writing requires fact and research checking.

 


Designer

A person who imagines how something could be made and draws plans for it.

What do they do?

  • A fashion designer loves to study fashion trends, sketch designs, select materials, and have a part in all the production aspects of their designs.
  • A graphic designer is a visual communicator, someone who creates visual concepts by hand or by using computer software.
  • An industrial designer develops the concepts for manufactured products, such as cars, home appliances, electronics, and toys.
  • An architect loves to design, and is specifically trained and licensed to work on the planning and design of buildings.

 


Detective

Someone whose job is to discover information about crimes and find out who is responsible for them. The world-famous one is Sherlock Holmes.

What do they do?

  • Street work: Interrogate suspects and interview witnesses to collect the evidence.
  • Forensic evidence: Forensic science is the application of sciences to answer questions of interest to the legal system.
  • Records investigation: Use records to provide background information on a subject.
  • Solving puzzles: Fully use logical skills, like deduction and induction, to find the truth of the crime.

Astronaut

A person who has been trained for traveling in space.

What do they do?

  • Mission Specialist Astronauts: These astronauts work with pilots to conduct experiments, launch satellites, and maintain spacecraft and equipment.
  • Pilot Astronauts: These astronauts serve as the space shuttle and international space station pilots and commanders. They are responsible for the crew, the mission, the mission success and the safety of the flight.

Paleontologist

A person who studies of fossils as a way of getting information about the history of life on earth and the structure of rocks.

What do they do?

  • Determines location of fossils
  • Gathers information on the fossils (age, location, etc)
  • Uses specific tools to excavate (chisels, drills, picks, shovels, brushes)
  • Identifies time period of fossils found
  • Shares results with colleagues from other scientific disciplines

 

Scientist

An expert who studies or works in one of the sciences.

What do they do?

  • Observing: Scientists use special tools, like microscopes, telescopes, or machines, to help them look closely at things.
  • classify: Scientists classify their founding in groups of things that are alike or different.
  • Infer and predict: Infer and predict things to what will happen based on their observations.
  • Communicate: Scientists need to share their discoveries. They may chart data, draw pictures, make graphs, or publish books and articles.

 


Photographer

A person who takes photographs. They generally work in a freelance capacity and is hired for specific jobs by numerous clients.

What do they do?

Some photographers work exclusively in certain segments of the industry, such as wedding, graduation and other event-type settings and spend most of their time taking photographs that will appear on business websites and other promotional material.
