Level 5 March 2018, Newsletter
Dear parents, as March comes to an end I want to take some time to inform you about what we have been doing so far. We are continuously enforcing a positive learning environment that supports every student in the classroom. In spelling class the students learned a lot of new words and are able to put them in the context of a sentence they constructed themselves. By doing this, the students are having a good exercise in making a correct sentence and creating a context for a word that they understand. In grammar class we have been covering the past tense with helping verbs. The students can now recognize the two different forms of the past simple and apply them to sentences. We will cover a lot of exceptions in training and keep working on them as this is a work in progress. The students can now properly conjugate the verb “to have” and use it in the correct context.
In Science Class we have been looking into our solar system. The class was divided into groups and each group was assigned with the task of researching a single planet of our solar system. The students were able to identify the most important characteristics of their planet and then presented this information on a poster. In order to research the students used books, pictures, factsheets and the internet. We also started a new unit in which the students will identify the different types of matter and their properties. In order to identify these properties we played a fun game that involved guessing the objects that other students picked by inquiring about their properties.
During Social Studies we looked at the history of different technologies. We started with the history of transportation and learned that vehicles can take on many different forms. We found out that the wheel was the most important invention in the history of transportation as it enabled travel to become more efficient and less labor intensive. After this, the students learned about the history of communication. We looked at many different ways of communicating such as the pony express, telegraph, and first computers. We then went on to create our very own telegraph messages which the students had to decipher.
In reading and writing class we finished our writing project about witches. During this writing project, the students wrote about the characteristics of witches and how they can help us recognize them. They then went on to brainstorm different methods to capture these witches. The writing project was a spinoff of the book called “the witches” by Roald Dahl which we have been researching. The students also presented this writing project during our new public speaking class in which they have to pay attention to their articulation, intonation, and posture. Overall, the students did a great job and were all very supportive of each other during the performances. Good job guys!
