November has been an exciting month here at Alexander Academy! We have been learning interesting things in Science and Social Studies as well as having fun in Reading and Writing. We are improving with classroom procedures. We are having a great fall semester!

Science and Social Studies

This month in Science we have been studying about animals and their habitats. We learned: how different animals live, survive, and thrive in their environment. We have made models of animal habitats and learned how animals get food energy from their environments. In Social Studies we have been learning about different cultures and how each culture makes contributions to the global society. We have also learned about how Taiwan contributes to the global society.

Reading, Writing, and Grammar

In Journal class, we have been working on creating a story using the elements of story structure. We have been developing characters for our stories, a setting (where it takes place), and a plot (what happens in the story). We have also written some personal narratives. In Grammar class, we have been learning the writing process and how to apply it to personal narratives and other writing projects. In Reading class, we have enjoyed reading about animals and their habitats. We made masks and acted out a play “Hiding at the Pond.” The reading skills they have been working on are; compare and contrast, author’s purpose, text and graphics, and story structure. We also have been learning to incorporate these skills into our writing assignments.

Research

In November, we have learned about how the nervous system controls voluntary and involuntary movements of the body. We learned about the effects of spinal cord damage and watched some videos of people who have suffered injuries to the nervous system. We have also begun our exploration of the digestive system! It’s going to be an exciting month in December!
