March has been a great month and the students have really focused on their work.
Because the first week in March was a short week there were no grammar or research lessons. In science we looked at measuring the weather. The students carried on reading Animal Farm and wrote a fictional adventure story about a shrinking potion. Spelling focused on the vowel sound in “cow”.
In the second week we had a review of the last five units in our spelling class. In science we looked at the water cycle and how clouds form. The students carried on reading Animal Farm and wrote a fictional adventure story about a secret tunnel. The Social studies lesson was about the history of thanksgiving. Our research lesson was about Judo.
In week three we learned about compound words in our spelling class. In science we discussed the weather in spring and summer. The students created their own animals and wrote about them in their journals, which tied in with our reading project. Our research lesson was about wrestling. In social studies we compared schools of today with those of the past.
In week four we learned about contractions in our spelling class. In science we looked at the weather in fall and winter. The students carried on reading and then used their imagination to write about talking with animals. Social studies was about transport in the past and present. Our research lesson was about the modern pentathlon.
The writing pieces I have selected this month are both fictional stories. The students really had to use their creativity in different ways to write these. The first one is entitled “The shrinking potion” which required the students to think about perspective and to write about observing the world as if they were very small. The second focused on descriptive writing. The students imagined they were scientists who created new animals by mixing the characteristics of two existing animals together.
I am excited to see the continued progress from my students over the next few months.
