Our first month has gone by already and what an adventure it has been!  The students have learned a lot.  As with most new beginnings there are some challenges in adjusting to a new teacher and new school year, but they have done well in overcoming those challenges.  With our routines in place they are able to be engaged and eager to learn.

This month is the start of students building upon their single phonemes and learning about phonetic blends.  These can be difficult sounds to grasp on the first try.  We will spend extra time to develop the sounds properly.  With practice in our classroom discussions, reading and role playing they will be able to use them with ease.

Sight Words is also a new concept this year for the students.  These words are the most commonly used words in English.  The start of the program is quite easy for the students because they have been using these words in daily conversation.  For now it is making sure the students understand how to learn these commons words because the words will become less familiar as the year progresses.

The students have been introduced to independent writing.  This is also a new idea for the students to comprehend.  Initially, we reinforce basic sentence structure.  From there, they form sentences with the teacher’s guidance.  Soon they will be writing complete and thoughtful sentences of their own.

They have been enjoying learning various themes all month.  This month we covered my body, family, feelings & emotions, and clothing.  We had a great time demonstrating how the human body’s digestion system works.  We experienced how food begins to break down in our mouth even if we don’t chew it.  We reenacted what it is like for our stomach to break down food using an acid. We even saw how long the small and large intestines are and were amazed that it all fits inside our body. We had a great time with our wedding celebration dinner party.  The students were able to demonstrate how everyone was related at our celebration.  They all helped in preparing for and cleaning up the event.  I’m looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for all of us!
