Dear parents, as the first month of the second semester comes to an end I want to take some time to inform you about what we have been doing so far. We are continuously enforcing a positive learning environment that supports every student in the classroom. In spelling class the students learned a lot of new words and are able to put them in the context of a sentence they constructed themselves. By doing this, the students are having a good exercise in making a correct sentence and creating a context for a word that they understand. In grammar class we have been covering the past tense with helping verbs. The students can now recognize the two different forms of the past simple and apply them to sentences. We will cover a lot of exceptions in training and keep working on them as this is a work in progress. The students can now properly conjugate the verb “to have” and use it in the correct context.
In Science Class we have been looking into fossils and how they are formed. We learned that fossils are the remains of living things that lived at least more than 3000 years ago. We looked at mold, cast, trace, and true fossils. We looked at examples of each of these types and made a small catalog in our notebooks. The students now realize that even fossilized waste can teach us a lot about living organisms and their environments. We also looked into the difference between flow resources, and fossil fuels. We learned that fossil fuels will eventually run out and pollute the environment.
In Social Studies we looked into energy and how it is created. We learned that flow resources can provide us with energy in many different ways. We found out that flow resources are infinite but currently still hard to harvest. We created a windmill that we will use to present the possibilities of flow resources on a poster. The students were all successful in creating their windmill and are now ready for the next step.
In reading and writing class we tried to convince someone of our opinion. Each student had to pick a random opinion that was generated by the teacher. They had to think of reasons and examples to enforce their point of view. The students all did a very good job at creating arguments and are now finishing their final draft.
