Dear parents, as the third month of the second semester comes to an end I want to take some time to inform you about what we have been doing so far. We are still continuously enforcing a positive learning environment that supports every student in the classroom. In spelling class the students learned a lot of new words and are able to put them in the context of a sentence they constructed themselves. By doing this, the students are having a good exercise in making a correct sentence and creating a context for a word that they understand. In grammar class we have been focusing on punctuation. The students reviewed all rules of punctuation and capitalization and applied them to different examples. Through this the students now have a better grasp on all the rules and are now able to correct their own writing.
In Science Class we have been looking at the different types of matter. We learned about solids, gasses, and liquids and their properties. We also looked into the senses and how we can use them to detect the different properties of the types of matter. We then started learning about energy and how energy can get transferred through sound. We learned that any vibration of an object can cause sound. We did some science experiments to demonstrate these phenomena and recorded our findings. Through these science experiments we found out that sound travels at different speeds through different types of matter. To our surprise we discovered that gas is actually the slowest medium for sounds to travel through.
In Social Studies class we looked into the explorers of the past. We learned about different explorers such as Marco Polo and their reasons for exploring. We found out that trading was a very big motive since travelers could acquire rare items that increased value as they brought it back home. This introduced us to the concept of scarcity and how it affects the price of a product. We also learned about navigation and how it was much harder for explorers in the past to navigate through uncharted territory.
In reading and writing class we started a new writing project. The students wrote about their very own kingdom that had its own rules, rights, and values. The students were free to use their creativity but still had to follow the writing prompt. We then successfully went through our second public speaking class during which the students were able to work on the pointers from last time. Good job guys!
