Dear parents, as the first month of English school comes to an end I want to take some time to inform you about what we have been doing so far. The class was off to a great start. We spent some time getting into the routines but by the end of this month everything is already running smoothly. In spelling class the students learned a lot of new words and are able to put them in the context of a sentence they constructed themselves. By doing this, the students are having a good exercise in making a correct sentence and creating a context for a word that they understand. In grammar class we are currently reviewing and enforcing the basic structure of a sentence. We are focusing on making grammatically sound sentences that have a proper action and naming part. We also looked into the simple subject and predicate. We can now identify and locate the different parts of these sentences. This will later help us to talk about sentence structure.
In Science class we have been looking into the needs and abilities of living things. We spent some time to look into the processes that define living things and why all living things need them. We compared non-living and living things by using a Venn diagram. We found out that only certain processes are found back in living things and that we need all of them to be able to speak of a living organism. From there we started by talking about different organisms. We found out that we need at least one cell to speak of an organism. We also found out that some organisms are more intricate then others. We looked into the differences between plant and animal cells and observed that they are different but also very alike.
In social studies we looked into Geography. We found out that this scientific subcategory researches not only geographical locations but also the connection with the people that live there. We figured out that the location people live in will influence their culture and way of life. We looked into Taiwan and saw that a coastal lifestyle also comes with an intricate fishing industry. We also looked into the connection between mountains and religion and how they have always been an important factor for people who live in Taiwan.
In reading and writing class we started looking into different reading strategies and how to structure a good text with meaningful substance. In writing class we started a writing project on creating intricate characters. We talked about protagonists and antagonists and found out that we can define these characters by giving them specific personality traits. In prewriting we made sure that both protagonist and antagonist had a clear goal. We also made sure that each character would undertake different actions to reach their goal. We are also spending a lot of time on proofreading and thinking about the story we are creating.
