April has been amazing at Alexander Academy! In science we have been learning about matter. In Social Studies we have been learning about America’s government. In Reading we have been practicing fluency. In Writing we have been applying the writing process to a variety of topics. In Research we are beginning to practice for our presentation.
Science and Social Studies
This month in Science we have been studying about matter. We learned about the three states of matter solid, liquid, and gas. We also have done some experiments to learn how matter can change from one state to another. In Social Studies we have been learning about the American government. We discussed some of the officials who played a vital role in making the government run smoothly. Finally, we talked about the election process and how these officials obtain their positions as leaders..
Reading, Writing, and Grammar
In Journal class, we have been writing stories and some shorter essays. Some of our titles included; I Think Climbing Trees is…, I Want to Change the World by… and A Self-Evaluation (regarding academic goals). In Grammar class, we have started the unit on verbs. In the coming month we will be moving into writing book reports and reviewing verb tenses. In Reading class, we have enjoyed reading selections of fun fiction and some interesting non-fiction stories as well. The stories included: Officer Buckle and Gloria, You are Special and review of some stories we have already read. Reading skills covered in this unit include; author’s purpose, main idea and details, compare and contrast.
In April, we have learned about the anatomy and functions of the integumentary system also known as the skin. We learned that the skin is the largest organ of the human body. The parts of this system include the skin, hair, nails, and exocrine glands. Its purpose and function is to protect us from germs, to protect underlying tissues from damage, and it allows us the sense of touch. It also serves to regulate body temperature and process important nutrients. The skin was the last system we will be learning about. Now the students will focus on preparing for the end of year presentation.
